A mine worker has died overnight while working underground at the CSA Copper Mine near Cobar in New South Wales.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a 26-year-old man was reportedly trying to remove a blockage from a pipe when he was sucked further inside the same pipe and became trapped.
The incident reportedly occurred at approximatley 11.15pm last night (Wednesday).
Co-workers immediately retrieved the man from the pipe and he was taken by paramedics to Cobar Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A statement from mine owner, Glencore, says,”We are cooperating with the NSW Police and other authorities who are investigating the fatal event, and have notified the man’s family.”
“Our primary concern is for the safety and welfare of our people, and we are offering counselling and support services on site.”
NSW Resources and Energy Minister Anthony Roberts said the man’s death as a “tragic accident”.
“I would like to extend my deepest condolences and prayers to the man’s family, friends, co-workers and the wider Cobar community, during this very difficult time,” he said.
The NSW Mine Safety Investigation Unit and police are continuing investigations and will prepare a report for the coroner.
