An iron ore company owned by Rio Tinto has pleaded guilty to failing to provide a safe working environment for its employees, after the death of a man at a Western Australian mine.
Brent Glew, 27, was crushed to death while removing a tilt cylinder from a loader at the Brockman 2 mine near Tom Price in August 2011.
The Canning Vale resident was working in the mine’s mobile equipment maintenance workshop at the time.
Operations at Brockman 2 were suspended for two days following Mr Glew’s death.
The mine operator, Rio Tinto subsidiary Pilbara Iron, was later charged by the Department of Mines and Petroleum over the death.
Pilbara Iron appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court yesterday and is expected to be sentenced during a court hearing later this year.
